Guidance/Counseling
Sesser-Valier High School maintains an active guidance & counseling program.  The information listed below is intended to help SVHS students and parents keep informed about student assessments, college entrance/registration/application requirements, scholarships (applications, deadlines, etc.), student scheduling, and how to request academic records.

Student Assessment

Rend Lake College will be giving the ASSET test on 1/27/16 at 8:30 a.m. in the high school library. Sign-up in the high school office if you would like to take this test. See Mrs. Henry if you have any questions.  

  PSAT- October 14, 2015
        The PSAT is a practice SAT and a NMSQT scholarship qualifying test for juniors. More information about the test is available at http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/psat/about.html. Scores will be reported in December.

    
Students wanting to retake the ACT should visit the ACT website at  www.act.org to register to take the test. Test dates and information regarding the test are available on the ACT website. 

AP Testing - AP tests will be in May.  AP registration form and deposit are due no later than 2/5/16
  
College Information

    Representatives from the following colleges/universities will be conducting informational meetings at Sesser-Valier High School:

No Colleges are scheduled for a visit at this time.

        

Seniors planning to attend a four-year university in the fall of 2016 need to start applying for admission. Also, check college websites for open house dates. Open houses are a great way to gain a lot of information about each college/university.


      
    College/Military Visitation

        A senior is permitted two visits to a college or university of his/her choice providing the following requirements are met: (1) the student notifies his or her teachers prior to leaving and completes the necessary forms. Even though the student is not in attendance, he/she shall not be counted absent. (2) A student must be eligible to  graduate in order to secure a college visit. (3) All visitations should be prior to the 
month of May, and one visit shall be on the first day of the Prairie State Exam. (A 
third college or university visit may be approved by school administration if a senior must complete an on-campus college exam for admission, must complete and on-campus task for receipt of a scholarship, or must attend a required orientation day.
       
    Financial Aid 

 Seniors the financial aid application will be available starting January 1, 2016.   The financial aid application/information will be available at http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/.  It is recommended that the FAFSA be completed by March 1, 2016.

Rescheduled Date

FAFSA work day - Rachel Sveda from Rend Lake College will be here on Tuesday, February 9th from 1:00-4:00 p.m. to help students and parents complete the FAFSA. More information will be mailed home in January.

The Stockton Family Scholarship is available to senior students planning to attend SIUC in the fall. The deadline is 2/5/16. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

The CBAI Foundation has a scholarship available to seniors. The deadline is 2/3/16. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

The Illinois PTA has a scholarship available for students planning to major in education. Applications are available at www.illinoispta.org/scholarshipapplication.html. The deadline is 2/15/16. See Mrs. Henry if you have any questions.

Buick Achievers has a scholarship program available to seniors planning to major in engineering, technology or design with an interest in the automotive industry. The deadline is 2/29/16. Applications are available at www.buickachievers.com. See Mrs. Henry if you have any questions.

The Illinois AMVETS Service Foundation has various scholarships available at

The Township Officials of Illinois have a scholarship available to seniors with a minimum GPA of 3.00 and who are planning to attend college in Illinois. The deadline is 3/1/16. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

Peoples National Bank has a scholarship available to seniors with a GPA of 3.0. The deadline is 3/1/16. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

The Sesser Junior Woman's Club has a scholarship available to any senior. The deadline is 3/4/16. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

The Franklin Hospital Auxiliary has scholarships available for nursing and healthcare. The deadline is 3/15/16. Applications are available at www.franklinhospital.net or from Mrs. Henry.

The Illinois Sheriff's Association has a scholarship available for seniors planning to attend college in Illinois. The deadline is 3/15/16. Applications are available at www.ilsheriff.org. See Mrs. Henry if you have any questions.

Eternal Friends in Christ Worship Center has a scholarship available to seniors. The deadline is 3/16/16. See Mrs. Henry for an application.

The South East Illinois AHEC Network has a scholarship available to seniors planning to major in a health science related field. The deadline is 3/18/16. See Mrs. Henry for an application.
